- July 2002: Impressions from Stromboli's continuing strombolian activity -

9-10 July: Strong strombolian activity at NE crater

The activity of Stromboli's NE crater was impressive in early July 2002: since some weeks it has been showing almost continuous glow and spattering, as well as occasional strombolian bursts up to 3-400m high at intervals of 5-15minutes. It is a clear sign, that the level of the magma column must be unusually high within the conduit. When will it find a way out through the flank of the cone??

The colour of the glowing lava during a small eruption fades in the morning light.

The central vent was completely inactive.

13-14 July: Continuing strombolian activity at NE crater

Magma continues visibly to be high within the conduit of  NE crater which produces 100-300m high explosions every 5-15 minutes (l.,m.). Occasionally, also Stromboli's NW crater (left side on picture r.) and the W vent inside the NE crater erupted, too, although with much less power than the main vent of the NE crater.
