22-23 July: fountains and magma bubbles in the lava lake

Violent lava fountains were present near the northern shore of the lake. Giant exploding lava bubbles up to 30m in diameter shower the lake surface and the surrounding walls with incandescent fragments, agitate the lake with waves up to 10 m high.

Lava fountains and heavy gas clouds generated by these. Unusually calm conditions permitted clear views of the interior parts of the caldera.
