BOCCA NOUVA AND VORAGINE IN EARLY JULY 2000

SEC 25 May 2000

SEC 25 May 2000

. Left: Michael standing at an exposure of the thick SEC snow-covering scoria deposit near Bocca Nuova.

Michael and a large young bomb from SEC near TdF...

'False alarm': no paroxysm on the afternoon of 25 May 2000, but a single ash eruption from the SE crater...

The deep NW pit of the Bocca Nuova crater.

Yellow sulfur deposits on the pinnacle between BN and the Voragine.
On the rim of Bocca Nuova's W pit. A new circular, ca. 5 m wide steaming vent has formed inside the Voragine.

SOUTH EAST CRATER IN EARLY JULY 2000

View down from the summit of SE crater onto the recent flows. Montagnola and Torre del Filosofo on the l picture in the background; Monte Frumento Supino in the background of the r photo.

The steep scoria covered slope of SE crater.

The interior of SE craters crater - a half-moon shaped valley.   The S end of the SE crater with one of the upper vents on the large eruptive fracture active during the 2000 SEC paroxysms.   The W rim of the SE crater.
The steep 1000m drop into Valle del Bove with exposed dikes. Fumaroles inside Bocca Nuova. The interior of the valley-shaped crater of the SEC. Who would imagine the awful forces that had emerged from this fracture?
SEC 3 June 2000
No paroxysms but quite strong winds at the TdF...(the tent is faster than Dominique !) Remaining glow from the lava flows of the 2 June afternoon paroxysm, taken the night after.
Early morning view NE towards Taormina in the background. Alcantara river cutting a gorge into basalt.
